A Group ‘A’ technical post in the Intelligence Bureau, recruited by UPSC through one 300-mark Recruitment Test and an interview. The 2026 cycle is live: the test is on 11 October 2026.
UPSC will hold the offline Recruitment Test on Sunday, 11 October 2026, 09:30 to 11:30, at fifteen centres. The medium is English only, per the corrigendum of 15 September 2026. Interview and result dates have not been announced; this page is updated when UPSC publishes them.

The Intelligence Bureau fills its Deputy Central Intelligence Officer (Technical) posts through the Union Public Service Commission, not through its own examination. UPSC advertises the posts in one of its regular recruitment advertisements, shortlists with a written Recruitment Test, and interviews the shortlisted candidates. What is tested
Exactly as UPSC lists them in the addendum notice. UPSC publishes no marks weightage per topic; the grouping below is ours, to show the electronics/computing split.
UPSC has published the full question paper of the test held on 5 October 2025 on upsc.gov.in under Recruitment → Recruitment Tests → Question Papers. It is the only official sample of the paper's difficulty and phrasing.

The pattern to notice: the advertisement has appeared between May and December, the test has followed three to five months later, and the final result has come six to eight months after the test. The 2019 cycle was the exception — its interviews were delayed to October 2021.

UPSC states only the pay level. With the dearness, house-rent and transport allowances in force in 2025–26, the gross for a Level-10 officer posted in Delhi comes to roughly ₹1.1 to 1.2 lakh a month; that is an estimate, not a UPSC figure, and it moves with every dearness-allowance revision. The post is permanent, Group ‘A’ Gazetted, with a one-year probation and all-India transfer liability.

Applications without the fee are rejected outright. No fee exemption exists for unreserved, OBC or EWS male candidates.
How to prepare
The Recruitment Test is 300 of the 400 final marks. The interview is 100, with a floor of 50 for unreserved candidates, so at most 50 marks of separation can come from the interview against 300 on paper. Treat the interview as a check you must clear, not as a place to recover.
That is 31% to 47% of the paper. In the two most competitive cycles (2018 and 2022) the unreserved cut-off was above 135. A target of 150 is 55 correct and 15 wrong out of 100 questions.
Each question is 3 marks; a wrong answer deducts 1. Guessing between two options is still worth it on expectation, but blind guessing across the paper is not. Learn to leave questions.
Seven of the thirteen topics are devices, digital electronics, communications, microwave and RADAR, satellite, signals and DSP, wireless. Computer-science graduates usually lose marks there, and electronics graduates lose them on data structures, operating systems, networks and security. Whichever side you come from, the other half is where the cut-off is made.
Between 1,287 and 3,415 candidates have sat the test in the cycles where UPSC has published the count, for 4 to 10 posts. That ratio rewards accuracy over coverage: the paper is broad, but you only need to be reliably right on the topics you choose to prepare well.
Since the September 2026 corrigendum the medium is English alone. Read the 2025 question paper, which UPSC has published, to get used to the phrasing and the mix of numerical and conceptual questions.
Questions
Deputy Central Intelligence Officer (Technical) is a permanent Group ‘A’ Gazetted post in the Intelligence Bureau under the Ministry of Home Affairs, at Level-10 of the 7th CPC pay matrix. The advertised duties are supervision of communication networks and equipment, maintenance and operation of cyber-security and forensics equipment, R&D in electronics and telecommunication, and supervision of audio, video and CCTV equipment. Headquarters is New Delhi with all-India transfer liability.
The application window for Advertisement No. 06/2026 closed on 3 July 2026. UPSC will hold the Recruitment Test on 11 October 2026 in the forenoon session, 09:30 to 11:30, at fifteen centres. Interview and result dates have not been announced. There are six posts: three unreserved, two EWS and one OBC.
A B.E., B.Tech or B.Sc (Engg) in Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Electronics and Telecommunication, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Technology, CSE, Information Technology or Software Engineering; or AMIE / AMIETE in Electronics and Communication (for enrolments up to 31 May 2013); or an M.Sc in Physics with Electronics or Telecommunications; or an MCA after a B.Sc in Physics, or an M.Sc in IT, Computer Science or Software. No work experience is required. Age limit is 35 for unreserved and EWS candidates, with 38 for OBC in the 2026 advertisement and 40 for SC/ST in the 2024 advertisement.
One offline, pen-and-paper Recruitment Test of two hours, objective multiple-choice, 300 maximum marks with all questions carrying equal marks, in English only, with a one-third deduction for every wrong answer. The October 2025 paper had 100 questions of 3 marks each. Candidates shortlisted from the test are interviewed for 100 marks. The final merit is the test at 75% and the interview at 25%.
Thirteen topics: engineering aptitude with logical reasoning; electronic devices and circuits; digital electronics; computer programming and data structures; analog and digital communications; microwave engineering and RADAR systems; satellite communications; signals and systems with digital signal processing; computer organisation and operating systems; computer networks and cyber security; wireless communications and networking; artificial intelligence; and the internet of things. UPSC publishes no marks weightage per topic.
On the 300-mark Recruitment Test, the unreserved cut-off was 123.33 in the 2024 cycle, 100.00 and 93.33 for the two advertisements tested together in November 2023, 135.83 in the 2022 test and 142.00 in the 2018 test. The final unreserved cut-off out of 400 was 185.18 in 2024 and 205.50 in 2022. UPSC has not published sheets for the 2020 and 2025 tests.
1,926 sat the October 2024 test for 9 posts; 3,415 sat the October 2022 test for 10 posts; 1,700 and 1,287 sat the November 2023 test for two advertisements of 4 posts each; and 2,697 sat the January 2018 test for 6 posts.
Level-10 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, which starts at a basic pay of ₹56,100 per month, plus dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance. UPSC does not publish an in-hand figure; with current allowances the gross in Delhi works out to roughly ₹1.1 to 1.2 lakh a month, which is an estimate and changes with each dearness-allowance revision.
₹25 for unreserved, OBC and EWS male candidates, paid online. Women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates pay no fee. Applications are made through UPSC's Online Recruitment Application portal.
